But the United States cannot seek communication while it continues to escalate the confrontation,\u201d Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said today at a press conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe United States must work with China with the shared goal of managing disputes and properly handling this unexpected, isolated incident to avoid misunderstandings,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Thursday, Biden said he expected to speak with Xi about the \u201cspy\u201d balloon, but made clear he would not apologize for shooting it down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Biden also warned that he will not hesitate to shoot down any flying object that poses a threat to the American people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Chinese \u201cspy\u201d balloon was spotted in late January in U.S. airspace and was shot down over Atlantic waters on February 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The airship had spent days flying over several areas of the country, including the state of Montana (northwest), home to one of the three nuclear missile silo fields in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For its part, the Chinese government has stated that the balloon entered U.S. airspace after drifting off course by mistake and claims it was used for meteorological purposes, not espionage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the \u201cspy\u201d balloon, the United States has shot down three other flying objects over its territory and Canada in the past week, whose origin is being investigated by U.S. and Canadian authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After years of tensions under the administration of Republican Donald Trump (2017-2021), Biden and Xi met for the first time as presidents last year at the G20 in Bali, in an attempt to ease tensions and prevent the rivalry between the two powers from turning into open conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the discovery of the \u201cspy\u201d balloons has rekindled tensions and even led to the suspension of a trip to China that Secretary of State Antony Blinken had planned. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Thursday, Biden said he expected to speak with Xi about the &#8216;spy&#8217; balloon, but made clear he would not apologize for shooting it down.
