{"id":9200,"date":"2022-09-30T18:52:09","date_gmt":"2022-09-30T18:52:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/asia-ibs.com\/v2\/chancay-the-mega-seaport-china-is-building-in-peru\/"},"modified":"2022-09-30T18:52:09","modified_gmt":"2022-09-30T18:52:09","slug":"chancay-the-mega-seaport-china-is-building-in-peru","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asia-ibs.com\/en\/chancay-the-mega-seaport-china-is-building-in-peru\/","title":{"rendered":"Chancay, the Mega Seaport China Is Building in Peru"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Construction of the Chancay seaport is 18.89% complete overall, according to the government of Peru.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Work on the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thelogisticsworld.com\/comercio-internacional\/chancay-el-mega-puerto-maritimo-que-china-construye-en-peru\/\">Chancay port terminal<\/a><\/strong> has reached 18.89% overall progress, according to Peru&#8217;s Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Its construction, according to that Peruvian ministry,&nbsp;<strong>is key for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thelogisticsworld.com\/comercio-internacional\/como-afecta-al-comercio-internacional-el-conflicto-taiwan-china-eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">international trade<\/a>,<\/strong>&nbsp;as the new facility is intended to become a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thelogisticsworld.com\/logistica-y-distribucion\/principales-hubs-logisticos-en-mexico-donde-se-encuentran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>hub<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/a>that redistributes cargo from Chile, Ecuador and Colombia.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not long ago, Chancay was a quiet fishing and farming enclave on Peru&#8217;s central coast frequented by tourists, according to a BBC report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the lives of its 63,400 inhabitants are about to change<strong> with the creation of this megaport<\/strong>, which will turn the town into a key link in trade between Latin America and China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who is building the new seaport?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Cosco Shipping Ports<\/strong>&nbsp;is the Chinese state-owned company building the Chancay Multipurpose Port Terminal 80 kilometers north of Lima.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The megaport aims to become one of the preferred departure points for the&nbsp;<strong>raw materials<\/strong>&nbsp;the region exports to China, such as copper and other minerals that Peru produces in abundance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its builders intend that, given its size and volume of operations, it will become a<strong> nerve center of international trade.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The investment in its construction is considerable: 3.6 billion dollars according to official projections.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The complex engineering work already under way could attract 50% of the roughly 580 billion dollars in trade that moves between China and South America each year, according to Peruvian government estimates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Peru&#8217;s new seaport will look like<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project envisions the use of up to 15 berths, which would make it&nbsp;<strong>the largest in Latin America and the Pacific<\/strong>. Its first stage contemplates the operation of up to four loading and unloading points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/918429.smushcdn.com\/2325059\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/operacion-con-contenedores-en-puerto-maritimo.jpg?lossy=1&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1\" alt=\"puerto mar\u00edtimo\" class=\"wp-image-646386\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The head of the MTC, Geiner Alvarado, said in an interview with local outlet Per\u00fa 21 that<strong>&nbsp;the megaport will decongest the access routes<\/strong>&nbsp;to the port of Callao.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>That will generate opportunities for cargo coming from the east and the central highlands; it will also raise its&nbsp;<strong>competitiveness<\/strong>&nbsp;against other markets. This will make it possible to meet growing port demand and reduce costs and cost overruns in the domestic and international market,\u201d he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given the scale of the project, it will receive vessels of up to 18,000 TEU capacity,&nbsp;<strong>considered the largest ships in the world.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The idea of building a complementary port to relieve congestion at El Callao, the main point of arrival for goods entering Peru, had been on the table for some time, according to the BBC report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A controversial construction<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the arrival of investment from Cosco Shipping, the project took shape and its controversial construction began, as<strong>&nbsp;environmental groups have raised doubts about the well-being of the area<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In case you missed it:<\/strong><br><a href=\"https:\/\/thelogisticsworld.com\/comercio-internacional\/el-86-del-trafico-mundial-de-contenedores-se-concentra-en-146-puertos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>El 86% del tr\u00e1fico mundial de contenedores se concentra en 146 puertos<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To build the port, one of the hills that formed part of the cliffs typical of that area of Peru was demolished, and to connect it with the Pan-American Highway&nbsp;<strong>a 1.8-kilometer tunnel is being excavated beneath the town center of Chancay<\/strong>&nbsp;that will have three lanes for vehicle traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The link will also have two lanes for the&nbsp;<strong>transport of solid bulk cargo<\/strong>&nbsp;and pipelines for liquids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There will also be large <strong>container storage<\/strong> areas, parking for heavy vehicles, offices and <strong>customs facilities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mega project also aims to&nbsp;<strong>boost the so-called New Silk Road.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, its construction <strong>is part of the Chinese government&#8217;s massive investment plan<\/strong> to build large infrastructure projects around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/thelogisticsworld.com\/comercio-internacional\/chancay-el-mega-puerto-maritimo-que-china-construye-en-peru\/\">The Logistic World<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Construction of the Chancay seaport is 18.89% complete overall, according to the government of Peru.
