When is Chinese New Year? – The date changes every year

For the Chinese, years begin on the Chinese Lunar New Year, the first day of the Chinese lunar calendar rather than on January 1.

The date of Chinese New Year changes every year, but it always falls between January 21 and February 20.

The date is determined by the Chinese lunar calendar, which is based on the cycles of the moon and the sun and generally runs 20 to 50 days ahead of the (internationally used) Gregorian calendar. Chinese New Year is a new moon day, usually the second one after the winter solstice.

How long are the New Year holidays in China?

The official holidays – 7 days

The public holidays in China for the Lunar New Year are 7 days, from Chinese New Year’s Eve to the sixth day of the new year of the lunar calendar (in 2022 that will be from January 31 to February 6).

Officially, only the first three days of Chinese New Year are official holidays. Chinese people must work the two weekend days closest to the statutory holidays to “make up for the work time.”

Offices, banks, factories, shops and most non-essential services will close their doors for a week of holidays. Hotels and large retail establishments stay open and may even be busier than usual!

School holidays last four weeks, and migrant workers leave their factory and construction jobs for weeks to return home.

The holidays in Hong Kong, Macau and other Asian countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam and Korea run from 1 to 3 days.
