China and Mexico Hold Talks on Access for Fish to the Chinese Market and on Investment

China’s investments in Mexico totaled 1.584 billion dollars from 1999 to June 2021

The Mexican and Chinese governments held the ninth meeting of the High-Level Working Group, in which they discussed sanitary protocols to allow Mexican food products, including fish, to enter China.

They discussed authorizing Mexican plants to export fish, whether live or processed, with the aim of enabling fishery products to reach China.

They also discussed the sanitary protocols that China imposes on  Mexico for various agricultural products, as several of them have yet to be finalized.

In the high-level meeting chaired by the Undersecretary of Foreign Trade , Luz María de la Mora, and China’s Vice Minister for International Trade Negotiations at the Ministry of Commerce, Wang Shouwen, the parties also addressed technical standards, the digital economy, trade facilitation, investment, customs, small and medium-sized enterprises, agriculture, and fisheries.

Both parties discussed progress on updating the Agreement for the Reciprocal Promotion and Protection of Investments, to which end they signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the Establishment of an investment working subgroup.

China’s investments in Mexico totaled 1.584 billion dollars from 1999 to June 2021.

China is Mexico’s second-largest trading partner, although the two countries do not have a free trade agreement. In 2020, imports and exports between the two countries totaled 81.397 billion dollars.
