China’s Ports Handle 142 Million TEU in the First Half of 2022

Ports across China handled a total of 142.3 million TEU during the first half of 2022, a year-on-year increase of 3%.

Over the same period, cargo volume at Chinese ports stood at 7.58 billion tonnes, a slight year-on-year decline of 0.8%.

The port of Shanghai had the highest traffic by volume, handling 3.79 million TEU in June, although the figure represents a 9.5% decline from the previous year.

Earlier this month, Shanghai authorities ordered new COVID-19 testing after the discovery of new cases, just as the city had begun to show signs of recovery.

The port of Ningbo-Zhoushan posted the second-best result, handling a total of 3.16 million TEU in June, up 17.9% from the previous year.

The average value of the Ningbo Containerized Freight Index (NCFI) in July fell 5.9% compared with the previous month, as shipping demand declined on the route between the port of Ningbo Zhoushan and the west coast of North America.
